Because no one explores for uranium when you've got half a century's worth of it already found. The truth of the matter is uranium prospecting has barely begun, with most of the earth's surface not surveyed for uranium, and many low-yield mines shut down due to the 1980s plummet in uranium prices. The true amount of reserves we have are at least 15X higher. But for purposes of this calculation, lets just assume they're only 5X higher. That gives us 250 years. So where's the rest come from?Right now we burn uranium fuel once, then throw it away. In the 1970s we used to reprocess that fuel. Burned in a breeder reactor, it actually makes more fuel...a process that can be repeated up to 20 times. President Carter banned fuel reprocessing for proliferation concerns, and the industry has never recovered.

The precautionary recall nearly two weeks ago of many popular pet food varieties may have done well to save the lives of millions of pets across the nation, but actual numbers of stricken pets are far higher than both the U.S. government and the company that manufactured the tainted food are letting on, one local veterinarian says.According to Dr. Jeffrey French, a veterinarian at Cape Ann Veterinary Hospital on Essex Avenue in Gloucester, pet deaths and illnesses have been "grossly under-reported" by the Food and Drug Administration and Menu Foods, the Toronto-based pet food manufacturing company whose "cuts and gravy" style foods have officially killed at least 14 cats and one dog, and sickened one woman in Ottawa. As of several days ago, the Veterinarian Information Network (VIN), an Internet forum for veterinarians, reported 471 cases of cats and dogs that showed symptoms of having been poisoned, and 104 deaths due to kidney failure, Dr.

When the program was returned to the FISA court in January of '07, initially we had coverage that we had asked for. But over time, because technology had changed, and the law of '78 had not been changed, because technology had gone from a wireless world to a wired world, foreigners communicating in a foreign country, more than likely the communications would pass through the United States. Therefore the court said that if it touches a wire, consistent with the law, you have to have a warrant. Now, a warrant means probable cause, which is a very time consuming process to go through. So we were in that situation last summer, we passed the new act to improve our situation--that act has now expired."

Hidden Cafe Closes in the Highlands

The Hidden Cafe, the only restaurant located in the upper Highlands, closed its doors to the general public on December 31, after a difficult financial year.

'It's all a bit of a shock,' said owner Mary Autera in an emotional interview at the cafe last week. 'I loved being here. It's the nicest people and the nicest community. Everyone is so genuine.'

The restaurant, located at 1515 Palisades Dr., opened in April 2002 and was successful from the beginning. Customers liked the menu and the hearty portions. In addition, Autera hosted various artistic endeavors like jazz night and displayed the work of local artists. She also started a catering business.

By 2005 the restaurant was well established, with a large Highlands clientele and a catering business that was popular all over the Westside.

Rethinking breakfast to feed your brain and body

Gail Frank's voice, soft and southern, made its way through a sea of scientific data. I met her for breakfast at a cozy coffee shop in Seal Beach and while we consumed our eggs (hers an egg-white spinach omelet, mine two eggs over medium) we discussed what Frank considers a crisis of utmost importance. Breakfast.

Frank, a professor of nutrition at California State University Long Beach and a registered dietitian, says that breakfast is an issue for adults and children alike.

"Breakfast fuels us for the day. It is energy for the brain and gets you started," she said using her fork to cut her huge omelet in half before she'd taken one bite, scooping it into a take-out container to eat later in the day.

"We need 130 grams of carbohydrates a day for normal function.
